A cashmere sweater is luxuriously soft and expensive, so you want to know how to wash it. By proper care and maintenance, you can keep it beautiful and wearable for a long time.
Cashmere comes from cashmere goats that are found in China, Iran, Mongolia, Tibet and India. It is the downy layer of hair that keeps the goat warm in cold temperatures. In the spring, the goats shed their hair, and the loose hair is combed and collected for yarn. While the natural colors of cashmere are white, gray and brown, it can easily be dyed in a vast range of colors.
After the yarn is created from the cashmere hair, it is then knitted or woven into garments. Items made from cashmere include coats, jackets, hosiery, gloves, scarves, robes, socks and sweaters.
Before washing your cashmere sweater, you need to prepare some tools in advance, including sink or plastic tub, a mild detergent, 2 towels, and a drying rack. Now, you can begin to wash.
Find a Clean Washing Area: A sink is the perfect place to wash your cashmere sweater by hand. Be sure that the sink is clean before you start. You can also use a plastic tub as long as you are near a water source.
Water Temperature: Check the label on the cashmere sweater to find the recommended water temperature for washing the garment. Use cold water if there is no suggested water temperature. Do not wash in hot water, because it will shrink your cashmere sweater. Cold water is ideal since it’s better at rinsing out the detergent from the sweater.
Getting Started With the Washing: Fill the sink or tub with cold water and add a small amount of Woolite. Mix the water and the detergent using your hand. Submerge the cashmere sweater into the water. Gently, knead and push your fingers up and down to work the detergent into the sweater for about 10 minutes. Do not pull or lift your sweater in and out of the water. And then, leave the sweater to soak in the water and detergent for about 15 minutes.
Draining the Water: Carefully ball the cashmere sweater up into your hand and hold while you let the water drain from the sink. Never pick up a wet cashmere sweater by the shoulders or hem. This will stretch your cashmere sweater out of shape. Rinse all of the soap subs out of the sink with cold water.
Rinsing the Cashmere Sweater: Refill the sink with only cold water and put in the cashmere sweater. Delicately swirl the sweater in the water.
Drying the Cashmere Sweater: Carry the cashmere sweater by balling it up in your hands. Lay the cashmere sweater on a towel. Place another towel on top of the sweater and roll up the towels and sweater. Excess water is absorbed by the towels. Lay the cashmere sweater on a drying rack and let it air dry.
